On Thursday, 13 February 2025, the Port Education Centre at Port Melbourne saw a hypothetical maritime exercise take place.
The scenario was designed to test how agencies respond when there is a large and complex maritime accident involving many casualties.
Named 'Exercise Etoimos', the scenario involved participants from many agencies including Ports Victoria, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the Department of Transport and Planning and Victoria Water Police.
Exercises like this build relationships and understanding across organisations and people. The outcomes and lessons from it, then put into action, are vital in helping our emergency services continually hone and improve how they respond to emergency events.
The regular review of Victoria’s preparedness and the testing of our procedures, people and cross agency communication and coordination benefits not just our first responders and staff but also the Victorian public who we serve.
