Dandenong Ranges Landscape Bushfire Project

The Dandenong Ranges is one of the most beautiful places to live and visit but it also has a complex bushfire risk due to the intersection of public and private land, and population density. The Dandenong Ranges Landscape Bushfire Project is a Victorian-first bushfire planning program designed to improve bushfire preparedness among the local community, government and fire agencies. The project is looking at existing gaps in fire management plans, while identifying short and long-term issues and priorities to improve bushfire safety.

The Dandenong Ranges Landscape Bushfire Project is reviewing a range of issues, including:

• Public and private land management
• Demographics and population;
• Community planning and preparation; and
• Understanding fire behaviour

The pilot program involves Emergency Management Victoria, with DEPI, Parks Victoria, CFA, Victoria Police, Vicroads, members of the local community and the Yarra Ranges, Cardinia, Casey and Knox councils.

A key outcome of the plan is to inform municipal and local fire management plans about how communities, agencies and Government can better prepare for bushfires and act when faced with a fire threat or when responding to fire.
